I took my Macbook back to the shop today so I can get it fixed. I don't have an official Apple store here but an authorized Apple reseller. They also have Apple techs to do repairs. The tech guy there made it sound like the whine cannot be fixed and that I would have to live with it. It's a rev A laptop, they just have some problems he says. So I ask him about all the Macbook Pro's that are being fixed with the same probem. He tells me they are coming back with the same whine. Is this true? Have any of you Macbook owners had your laptop whine fixed? Oh and my Macbook also shuts down whenever it wants to, but that's a different story.

I have a MBP, and an authorized repair store around Richmond, BC knew about the whine, knew about the replacement program, and replaced my logic board without issue. Now I am whine-less.

When I brought my MacBook in for the discoloration issues last week, I also mentioned the whine. The tech said it might be the inverter, and so off it went to get repaired. Get it back yesterday, new top case looks great, but the whine is still there. To be honest, I only cared about the discoloration, the whine is something you get used to. Point is, they theoretically addressed the issue, and nothing changed.

I just called the tech and he said I have a bad logic board which is causing the shutdowns. It's going to be replaced so hopefully that will get rid of the whine. He also mentioned something about my RAM. I have one stick that is 1GB and the other is the stock 256MB stick. Now I know that the memory doesn't run as fast if they aren't matched, but he said since the video memory is shared it can greatly decrease my video performance. Is this true?

Apple will not replace/repair any macbook solely because of the whine. They just say they know about it.

It seems that buying a MacBook is risky business just now, with whining, heatsink issues, sudden freezes, discoloration. etc. I'm looking at replacing my daughter's iBook with the MB, but sure don't have time to deal with these problems. Is this the "echo chamber" web effect, or is it smart to hold on until Rev B and hope the iBook holds up for another semester?
Thanks.

I love mac's but I'm starting to think the build quality is sub-par. Ive owned 4 apple laptops and 3 have been sent into applecare. That's a little crazy. I will continue to be an early adopter but thats the price you pay.
