Hi,

my first thread here. So I have been experiencing a noise (like a HDD reading) coming form my powerbook in 2 weeks. I gave it in for testing and possible repair and was told that the fans are working perfectly fine. Got it back and the noise was still there. I was a bit scared because of heat isses and got Temperature Monitor. So
I messed around a little with the CPU usage and got a range of temperatures:

Leftlding for like 2 to 3 hours: 47-49C (Processor) and 50-51 (Prrocessor bottom side)
Mild Usage (iTunes, Surfing, IM - CPU 5 - 50%): 54-57C (Processor) and 56-60C (Prrocessor bottom side)
High Usage (QT Movie, VLC, iTunes Surfing, IM 60 - 100%): 58-63C (Processor) and 60-64C (Prrocessor bottom side)

I had higher temps (about 2C) when I but it flat on my bet, but that is understandable

Are these temperatures in an okay range? And if not which cooling pad do you guys and gals recommend?

An interesting observation I made was that the noise will decrease in volume if at lower temperature and will get louder until about 57C, and finally disappear over that temperatures and will not come back thill it has idled for a while. It also fully disappears when I unplug the machine and let it run on battery. Anybody got an idea about that?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Biest

I haven't run the ultimate test of encoding a movie with handbrake yet, so I dunno how that will effect the temperatures... forgot to add that

EDIT:

Thanks for the quick reply

Biest - for a little current perspective, my 15"MBP runs BOINC a lot and when both procs are maxed, it hits 81C

Those temperatures are absolutely typical of my PowerBook. Left fan comes on at 60degC. Both left and right fan come on if it gets really busy CPU-wise for a prolonged period.

well both my fans are turning to full power at 57.5C (the noise disappears as well)... so i guess that is normal

Does anybody have an explaination for the noise i'm hearing?

Thanks for the replies

Again me, sry for the triple post, but I have some new developments regarding the noise.
i just did a manual back up of DVD onto my external HDD and got another sound that is very temporary and sounds as if someting were squeeching (spelling?) inside the power in the area just above the HDD. Should I bring it to an Apple Store and have it checked out?

Damn why does this have to happen couple before school starts....

Core 1 in my MBP is running at 89! Core 2 at cool 86.
Do I need to worry?
