I was wondering if someone could give me some more information on the icons that appear on the macbooks destop. As i am a new mac user, i have no idea what some of these icons mean and do.

i have the main macintosh HD icon and i have the bitorrent icon, but i have some files which have a hard drive shape to them and they have the name of the software below it. And then i have other icons that have a page shaped icon with a image of themac HD on it. I was wondering if anyone could give me informtation on these files, because they were not in the book i got with my macbook.

If you've downloaded software, it usually is a .dmg file which is a disk image file. When opened, they appear as soft disks (white disk icon) on the desktop. When you are done copying off the software from the disk or installing it from an installer, eject the disk as you would a real disk (select disk and cmd-E or Eject from the File menu). The files with the picture of the hard drive are the .dmg files themselves that you downloaded. Go to Mac Help from the Help menu and search for disk images.
