AppleInsider | Merom's thermal specs fail to impress

Looks like I'll be holding off yet again getting a MBP. When is Apple finally going to address the heat issue? Or is it that pretty yet hot Al body that isn't helping. OTOH, I'm sure Apple ain't happy with this either. So much for the Intel more power AND cooler hype!

I guess the good news is Gen 1 MPB buyers will have little to be bummed out about when Merom appears next month - except some additional speed.

They aren't using Merom in the MBP…

Anyway, it's still not that high by the looks of it. They're just saying it's slightly higher than the Core Duo.

It's a few watts higher than the highest Core Duo available and a number of watts higher while in low power mode. It sounds like Apple will have to redesign the MBP's case, which wasn't ready for a hungrier chip (the Core Duo) in the first place.

I think the OP means when the MBP does end up using Merom

What worries me more than the TDP moving from Yonah's 30W to Merom's 34W, is the fact that when they downclock to 1GHz, Yonah draws 13W, whereas Merom still draws 20W. That's a whooping 54% more even when your MBP's idling. I would have expected better from Intel after all this hype about how concerned they were with the wattage of mobile CPUs.

34W is actually better than expected... it was supposed to be 35W for Merom and 31W for Yonah.

The talk of "battery mode" sounds strange. The previous mobile chips downclock the same on outlet power and battery power, subject only to system load.

Since these aren't public documents yet, we can't verify any of this. But this contradicts actual test results at Anandtech, which found no difference between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo in idle and full-load power consumption:
