apple's 100GB 7200 harddrive for the Macbook pro is $180(w/edu discount), is there a cheaper drive that i can install myself? i havnt been able to find a drive at the same speed and size that is cheaper.

Nope, that's actually a really good price as far as 100 GB/7200 RPM notebook drives go. However, if I were in your position, I'd go for a higher-capacity, 5400 RPM drive. There's little benefit to be had in most cases with a 7200 RPM notebook drive. Use the money you save to buy yourself some more RAM.
