The Apple Pro Speakers only work with Macs that have a dedicated output for them, which the MacBook does not have. (There was for a while an adapter to let them work on other Macs, but since those speakers were discontinued ages ago, the adapter is long-gone, too.)

you can use those speakers, but you'll need an amplifier to power the speakers. griffin used to sell a couple things that would work: the powerwave was a USB audio interface (plug the box into USB, plug speakers into box), there were also other outputs available on that box. the iFire was a small firewire box that did the same thing, but only had one output, meant for the pro speakers.

so you can use those speakers, but you're going to have one of these things first, and i don't think griffin makes them anymore.

Sadly, Griffin discontinued the iFire last fall. I bought one for my G5 Tower just before they disappeared. The iFire + Apple Pro speaker setup works great on my Tower. And I truly love the look and sound of those Apple Pro speakers (made by Harmon Kardon).

The downside of using the iFire on a MacBook is that the iFire uses a FW400 port to power the speakers (just power, not data). The MacBook has only 1 FW port to begin with. So now you need to get into FW hubs or just do without.
