I recently bought a macbook 2.0 ghz, my first mac. I also bought an apple video adapter, and I was wondering if it was possible to use it as an input, for example: plugging in a video game console and recording the game and watching it too.. Is there anyway to do this? Also, I am aware of products from El Gato and other companies that sell products that do this, but I already have an apple video adapter, and I don't want to shell out the cash to buy another thing. Thanks.

I am not sure exactly what you are talking about. Are you trying to use a Mini-DVI to S-Video adapter to record stuff? That won't work. Many capture devices and MiniDV camcorders will allow you to do what you speak of.

Thanks for the help. What I am trying to do is connect a mini-dvi to s-video or RCA video adapter to an input like a video game console and watch it on my macbook. Like you were saying, It wont work i guess. I do have a mini-dv camcorder so I will try that.

Another possibility - some Mac TV tuners have a game console mode. Here's one I'm interested in:

Most TV tuners have a lag which makes using them to connect to video game systems inadequate. However, Adaptec makes what I think is exactly what you are looking for but, unfortunately, it only lists Windows compatibility...

Adaptec - Adaptec GameBridge AVC-1400

Outpost.com currently has it on sale for $15...

The newest solution that looks like a winner is the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid:

Here's a FireWire one for $129.99 (after $10 rebate):

PYRO A/V Link Basic

Claims to be Mac-compatible.

edit: here it is again from Amazon.com, a better-known reseller. It's $149.99 here, though, and is the version that includes a useless Windows-only version of Adobe Premiere Elements.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
