Great timing. My daughter is off to school in a week, and she just dropped this off saying it won't start. Initially it would start for about a minute, then get multiple color patterns on the screen, then it asked to restart or something. Now it will start, but nothing on the screen(black), and the fan is constantly revving. Installed the OSX disk, but with holding the c key down still nothing.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

When I start the ibook I get the fan revving and a black screen. This happens wether or not I insert the OS disc or not. Is firmware the multiple discs that came with the ibook? Seems that the single OS would work as well as they would.

Right now I'm looking for the best priced 7200 rpm drive.

if you cant get into open firmware it's not a good sign for the machine. even if the hard drive and optical drive are toast, it should still be able to boot into open firmware...

I might be confusing firmware with something else. Is firmware all those multiple disks that came with the machine?

Firmware is the software stored on a chip inside the machine. The OS discs are the software (applications and mac os x). To get the CD out, boot the machine up while holding down the trackpad button.

keeping the trackpad button down doesn't work. We just purchased a new Macbook for her, but would still like to get the disc out. Might have to take the machine apart.

And yeah, if you can't get into Open Firmware, your machine probably needs some physical repairs.

It's possible that the trackpad and keyboard aren't working, but if they're not then there's not much you can do.
