My first post ,need some advice
I know I should get a Mac Pro (just too much money for a student, and I travel around every couple of months on plane so I can't really take a Mac Pro with me). With an iMac I can possibly take it as a carry on... i mean the 17" isn't that big.
I have a powerbook already... G4 1.67 ghz last rev of the powerbook line (rather sad if you ask me, i don't know if its up for doing intensive graphics/video stuff as I hoped for). So I am looking for another computer possibly like the 17" iMac but I am not sure how it is with video editing?
Or should I just forget about the iMac, sell my 17" powerbook (how much are they worth these days? I already maxed out the RAM its ok for editing and graphics just a bit slow) and wait for the soon to be updated (i hope) Macbook Pro?
Or is the macbook Pro up for it?
Programs I use: final cut, after effects, logic pro
(yes i know i should get a mac pro)
Thanks All

you're going to travel with a 17" imac? uh...
15" mpb, wait for the new ones (assuming the come sept...).
i run logic on a 12" powerbook; my gf runs FCP on a 15" pb.
the macbook pro should KILL with these apps, both intel ready...
you do not want to pack & travel with an imac...

fisherking is right, dont even think about traveling with the iMac.
Wait 2 weeks and see if any new macbook pros come out, and if they do, get one.

Yup, wait for the Merom MBPs due in September, then decide MBP versus Mac Pro. My guess is that the best 17" Merom MBP will meet your needs.
iMacs have no redeeming features for pro applications. The 2 GB RAM limitation is totally unacceptable for a desktop box intended for heavy graphics use, barely tolerable in a laptop (traded off to achieve portability). My personal hope is that MBPs will soon be released that can access more than 2 GB of RAM.

The other advantage of the PowerBook or MacBook Pro is expansion. You can add an extra firewire bus via the PCMCIA or Expresscard slot, which is handy when connecting cameras, decks and external HDDs. That isn't an option on the iMac where you're limited to FW400 bus.
As for the PowerBook 1.67GHz ... sure the MacBook Pro will be faster, but people were doing pretty reasonable work with Final Cut Studio on the G4s before Intel processors came along.

I think a MacBook Pro would be perfect for your needs. Sure, not as fast a Mac Pro, but when you're a student, a MBP is a LOT more than most other students have. Well, at least here. Besides, you've got to have something more powerful to upgrade to when you graduate!

But buying a new box is about the future not what folks did yesterday. A new box will run 2006-2007-2008 apps mostly on Leopard and beyond. Buying a 2005 architecture when new architecture is out and works great is a poor choice. Keeping a 2005 box until it becomes unusable does make sense.

According to the OP, he already has a 1.67GHz 17" PowerBook. All I'm saying is that the G4 might do what he wants. Especially since Adobe apps (After Effects mentioned) aren't universal yet. Depending on his financial position, that might be better then running out and buying a new system (that he might not absolutely need).
