I have a g4 powerbook, still under applecare.. The HD starts making a really loud noise and stops functioning when the humidity gets really high.

I already brought it into my university repair shop, and the story went like this:
- they waited a week to look at it.
- (their office was perfectly airconditioned and dry)
- by the time they looked at it, it was working again
- they tried to charge me to run disk warrior and didn't believe that the HD was broken.

So my question is this:

I'm not going back to the University repair place, it took them a week just to look at it, and another week for me to get it back... So if i call up applecare, I assume they'll replace the HD if it's still non-functional when they get it, but what will they do if it's dried out and working by the time they get it? Will they charge me?

Just to pre-empt anyone who says i'm running the machine out of spec, i've got 5 other HD's in internal and external boxes, none of which are dying because of the humidity.

My other question is, that the paint under the handrest is peeling.. is this covered under applecare? I want to sell the machine, and it'd be nice to have it in perfect condition..

well, nobody answered this so here's the rest of the tale and a question:

apple fixed the HD, and apparently the entire case. It's like brand new. I re-carbon copy cloned everything back to it and I'm all happy now.

My question is whether they changed the MB or not. Does anyone know what part numbers these are: (well, besides the HD and flex cable, which i can guess are the HD and cable

APPB-655-1138A DA HIT MORAGA-B 5400RPM 80GIG M APP-632-0178 FLEX CABLE HDD APP-6034937 ASSY TOP CASE PB12

thanks

I had to repair the HD in my iBook G4 and you have to completly take the iBook apart in order to get access to the HD. Apple has made this near impossible if you are not familiar with notebook components.

zaghahzag, No, that's the 80GB 5400RPM HD, a flex cable, and the top case (hand rest area).

webmonkie.. I probably messed up 2 of the first 5 iBooks I repaired... but I've got it down now... I can take it apart and put it back together in less than 30 min (for a hard drive... other parts are different). The more you do, the faster you'll get.
