Anyone have any opinions on these. They seem to be just like buying a new computer except it's not new. Thinking about this one:

Refurbished MacBook Pro, 15-inch Glossy Display, 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo
15.4-inch glossy widescreen display (1440x900 resolution)
1GB (single SODIMM) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
100GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive
Slot-load SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256MB GDDR3 memory
Built-in iSight Camera
Front Row and Apple Remote

Actually refurbished boxes usually are new or better than new (because they have been fully tweaked by a US technician rather than just by a robot in Asia). IMO refurbs are always appropriate if they offer the box you want.

Personally I am waiting to see the Merom MBPs before buying anything because I need the highest end. Refurbs may be gone by the time the Meroms are introduced.

I'm writing this on a refurb MBP. As stated earlier, they get looked over by a human, so, in my opinion, they're a sager bet than new.

Also, when I bought my MBP I checked this forum and a few others. In each I had people tell me Apple had upgraded their hard drives from the stock 5400 to the 7200RPM. With luck that's what I got (and wanted). In all I saved $700. So can you.

or
Look around. I paid $1500 (total, after all taxes and shipping fees and rebates) for my 15" 1.83 / 80 / SD MBP a little while ago from Amazon.com. That's a lot better than Apple's pricing of similar referbs.

(Note mine is brand new for $1500 - not a referb.)

But Im 90% sure It came with a 1yr warranty since it was a refurb. I just have to call them.

2GB Patriot Ram DDR2 667 (Thanks NewEgg; sold Apple Ram on eBay)
100GB (Not sure on RPMs)

I bought my refurb Macbook Pro back in June and I have no complains whatsoever. The only prob was with the touchpad, which was bubbled up in the middle. I dropped in off at the local apple store and they had to replace the upper case. Other than that it has been a champ!

I bought it for $1599 back then for the 1.83mhz model. My previous apple was the 1ghz 12" powerbook which I had also purchased as a refurbished unit. Refurbs have worked out great for me and the price is much better than buying new.

Find someone who is in school and that isn't going to use their lifetime academic discount. It's 20% off and once a lifetime only while in school.
