My superdrive is acting up. TiBook 1GHz 1G RAM, OS 10.4.7.

It accepts CDs, DVDs, CD-Rs, etc, tries to spin them up twice, then spits them back out.

I did a decent search here. What I've read and tried:

Log in as different user: nope
Reset PRAM and NVRAM: nope
Reset PMU: nope
Repaired Permissions: nope
Ran fsck: nope

However, one thread I found mentioned force booting from Install DVD, and I CAN do that, so I know the drive at least can read a disc.

The thread then advised to Archive and Install, and I'm just wondering how an OS problem could affect the drive in such a way. I shall try this next as it's cheaper than a new drive.

Any thoughts? Thanks.
Can you still feel?

Yes, archive and install.

The operating system controls everything, if the files needed to load media are corrupted, it can cause this type of problem. It's not user related, because you tried a new user, and if you can boot from a CD, I would say 90% an archive and install will take care of it.
