Hi, I'm currently a Freshman at Temple University in Philadelphia. I'm majoring in Advertising, and i'll be dealing with graphic design, photography and all that good stuff. But I have an issue. I only have a 12" iBook 1.33GHz, 60GB HDD, and 768MB RAM. I was reading around about Aperture and all those good programs and I seem to need to upgrade. I was wondering, since I won't need to get a new one immediately, I could just wait until the Spring when Leopard comes bundled with Macs to get one, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a good new computer to get. It definitely has to be a laptop, but I don't have the money to spend on a Macbook Pro. I was thinking the higher-end white Macbook, but I wanted to get some peoples input on whether or not it'll be good enough for Aperture, Quark and Photoshop. Also I heard Aperture needed like 2GB of RAM, yet, it's an extra $500 to throw that down in the Macbook. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not looking for the best machine, but one that will not frusturate me and still be fairly cheap. My limit would probably be around $1600, but again, I won't be looking for one til Leopard comes out so.....

That is also a good option. They have one for $1500 that could run Aperture, but you will still need more RAM. If you didn't have to have a laptop, a 17" iMac Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz would be a good choice. Plus, it comes with a gig of RAM, which can run Aperture OK, if you don't have any other apps open.

Alright, well, hopefully by Spring when Leopard comes out and I need a computer, i'll end up getting a Macbook Pro. I'll probably end up getting the cheapest one though, but how much memory should I have? I'm not looking for the best performance either, but rather enough that it won't get me frusturated.

Nonsense.
Though it is "unsupported" and will give an error message on startup about the screen resolution being too low, it will launch, and it runs well. Some of the visual effects (e.g. the fade to/from full screen mode) are choppy, but all actual work (organizing, image manipulation, etc) runs great.
If you connect an external display and run that as the main or only display, it won't even give that error.

Now that I think of it, maybe I will get a Macbook Pro. I'll probably get the cheapest one, but whatever, I want a good graphics card for the things i'll be doing. Do you think i'll need 2GB of RAM though? I probably won't be doing that much intensive stuff. I mostly need it for graphic design. I want Aperture though cuz i'll be taking up photography as well. So do you think i'll be fine with 1 or 1.5 GB of RAM for Aperture?
