The agency funding my graduate program ordered me an MBP through TechDepot (a unit of OfficeDepot). The funding agency has been informed that the MacBook Pro is backordered-and TechDepot doesn't have a "get well" date either. Aside from the fact that I have no clue why they went through TechDepot instead of a corporate account with Apple, this issue makes me wonder. And I wonder more because of the recent announcement of new iMacs and Mac Minis.

I have looked over AppleInsider, MacRumors, and ThinkSecret, but I haven't seen anything about the MBP at all. Has anyone else heard anything?

Shamelessly promoting rumors is a bad thing-but I never had much shame anyway. I'd love to hear something good about the MacBook Pro!

You mean apart from Merom having come out - which is a laptop processor which so far has only been put into the iMac?

And the Apple event on Sep 12th?

That's what I was thinking, but I was wondering about whether or not anything had been more specifically hinted. Of course I didn't see anything about the new, 24" iMac or the tweak to the Mini, either...

All the other major OEMs announced Core 2 Duo laptops a week ago Monday (Aug 28), so an update for the MBP to C2D is imminent.

Yes, but is the upcoming MBP update more than just a bump to Merom? If not, then why didn't Apple just update it along with the iMac and mac mini? I think this is the question we're all waiting for the answer to. I know I'm ready to pull out my credit card whenever it happens...

I agree...and will whip out my big fat wad as soon as the Blackbook Pro hits the stage. Hopefully the new MPB is the "one more thing".

The Apple store still shows a 24hr turnaround time on the 17" MBP but I hope something is announced on Tuesday. I'm ready to buy.

Everything points to Merom MBPs next Tuesday apart form this weird note.
Apple to delay Merom notebooks until 2007

Don't know what to make of it. Sounds like BS when you consider how many Merom PC notebooks will be out there soon, the new Merom iMacs, etc. OTOH it's not MOSR reporting this after all.

I have tried to shy away from rumors, mainly because I don't like being disappointed. But with the rash of "new Merom-based Macs are iminent" posts turning out to have a major seed of truth, and an actual committment by my funder to get me an MBP, I couldn't help but ask how much rumor I've missed.

Be prepared for a wild emotional roller coaster ride if you're gonna start listening to rumors. Somewhat akin to UFO sightings reports...still, we don't have long to wait for the real deal announcements...

Techdepot sure seems like a weird source, though.

ufp sightings at least have some element of truth in them, but macrumors...usually leave us disappointed in what comes next...

At least you're not sitting here telling yourself, "maybe if I wait long enough they'll come out with a MacBook mini.."

P.S. Glenn, you mentioned a big ol' career change and return to school in a previous thread. What kind of program are you in, anyway?

I spent over 23 years in the Air Force maintaining and managing communications equipment and then teaching maintenance and management of that same equipment. I'm now in a very tough program to become an Occupational Therapist. In about three years I'll have another bachelor of science and a master of science degree (entry level for OTs is the masters level as of January 2007), and be ready to take the registry test to become a registered OT.

While it's supposed to be a huge change in direction, a lot of what I already know is applicable-management and instructional systems, for example, taught me things like applied psychology and statistics. And of course one of the fundamental issues in occupational therapy is its application to rehabilitation, so there's a lot of mechanics involved. It's fascinating how many different things go into occupational therapy...

That sounds like a pretty awesome job, Glenn (I double-checked Wikipedia to make sure it means what I thought it did). It seems like you have your ish together and don't mind working hard, so I bet you'll do well.

As mduell keeps pointing out, almost everyone else has announced Merom laptops, so Apple should be doing so any Tuesday now. It wouldn't be totally un-Steve-like to announce an upgraded MBP line all nonchalantly at the media event, so he could say, "Updated laptops are nice and all, but check out <insert super-cool new product here>."

Thanks, slug. And you're so right about Steve's nonchalant style at announcements...that's kind of frustrating all by itself.
