a friend has a powerbook g4 (one of the older ones with the outputs on the back). He told me today that his powerook stopped working. Basically he turns it on and the apple comes up and then it shuts down almost immediately.

My first instinct is that he needs a new battery, but I just want to check because he says the computer is plugged in and the power cord lights up. Any ideas what might be wrong?

any suggestions are appreciated,
-SG

Does he have any RAM that he added? Try taking that out and seeing what happens. Sounds more like a logic board issue to me though.

The logic board is the motherboard of the computer. It contains the processor. It is fairly common for them to fail on older PowerBooks like this one. It is not a battery issue because PowerBooks can run without the battery. I forgot to mention: welcome to MacNN

that means that it is an expensive fix right? anything we should try before he puts the laptop in the trash (he bought it used for cheap - not much money in the bank)

It depends. It can be cheap sometimes on eBay, but if you aren't the do-it-yourself type I don't recommend it. It generally isn't really worth the price. But if you would like, I would take it off your hands.

Reset PRAM Battery and if necessary replace.... TiPB will not boot with an entirely dead PRAM battery.

Two sources.....

iFixit - iBook & PowerBook Parts - G4 Titanium Mercury PRAM Battery - 922-4361

I am a little surprised by the feedback I am getting here. I called Apple and the fix was really simple. Resetting the power manager, resetting the pRam and running disk utilities.

Is this website just an elaborate ploy convincing people to give away their functioning laptops, or better yet, buy hardware they don't need?

Next time, I will just call Apple.
