Hi all. I just got my MacBook Pro a couple of days ago, and I got myself all set up with all my music, photos, settings, and whatnot and today, all of a sudden, I lost all my data at once. I am rather confused and I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. TIA

Did you change the name of your home folder?

Actually, I did. And I was messing around with it last nite to see if I could fix my problem, and it seemed the files and stuff were all still on the HD somewhere, but it looked as if it was on a Server of some sort. It's getting rather confusing now. Any ideas?

Thanks

Reboot the computer. ONLY open 1 Finder window, no other programs, change your home folder name to what it was originally, close the Finder window and reboot. It should all re-appear.

Your user folder is where EVERYTHING is stored.

Change the name, and the computer can't find it and recreates the user folder with all the default settings.

1. Drag the NEW user folder (the newly system-created one with the original name) to the trash. DO NOT empty the trash.

2. Re-name your original user folder back to EXACTLY what it was originally and make sure it's in the Users folder.

3. Restart IMMEDIATELY.

Thanks a lot for the help guys.

I'm really not sure what I did last night on my own to try and fix it, but now I can't even find the old user folder with all my files in it. I know they're still on the HD somewhere, since it's still taking up space in there, but I have no idea what the hell happened to it. I know exactly what I have to do now, but I can't go and do it because the folder is somewhere in space. This is really driving me nuts!

Go to your HDD (usually Macintosh HDD), go to Users, and your old user folder should be in there.

Ahh, there it is. Any idea why it isn't shown as a folder (it has the little 'Network Globe' as an icon) and why I can't rename it? It's in the User folder under the name I had changed it to, but now it won't let me rename it.
