I know i'm not the only one with a wad of cash ready to be spent once apple releases merom mbp's.

seeing that they weren't announced at todays showtime event....how many of you think that the new mbps will be released alongside a new version of aperture at photokina?

lets hear your responses and post your votes!

I dunno but $1k for what amounts to a video card...in an old powerbook g4 case no less....is not an enticing proposal. They'd better up the ante soon.

its not much of a jump in speed, and to put Merom in it would be a waste. dont get me wrong...i would love to get a faster Comp. but apple is waiting for a bigger jump, they like to show off big Numbers for new products.

Well, presumably this could be along the same lines as the lowkey "update" of the iMacs, or even the previous quiet updates of the MBP line (going from 1.83 and 2.0 GHz to 2.0 and 2.16).

Apple doesn't need to do a big event just to release Merom updates; I mean, pretty much every other laptop maker has updated their lineups to include Core 2 Duo. There isn't any reason for Apple not to. Apple can save the "big splash" for the Santa Rosa platform next year.

Despite being not much of a performance increase now, a Merom machine would be a much better investment down the line than the current Yonah machines. It does represent an achitectural shift on Intel's behalf and while there may not be many 64-bit applications now, I can guarantee there will be more in 2-3 years.

This is the way I see it, Merom is great but the FSB is the limiting factor here meaning you wont get all of the real benefits of Merom till the Santa Rosa chipset comes out. My MBP 17" works great, working in Maya(booted into XP) is great, render times are cut by more than half from the Dells I used at school. Oh and no whine, no screen defects, no problems at all.

Major photography-oriented conference. I've heard people describe it as basically being for photographers what Macworld is for Mac users (i.e. a big huge deal).

Lots of companies release new cameras, photography related products, etc. there.

I concur.

And as to the 55% of responders who say MBPs will not be upgraded until 2007 - I would love to wager against you if there was a legal way to do it! PC Meroms have been announced, and there is no way Apple will let PC box builders get substantially ahead in the throughput wars.

More specifically, it makes no sense for Apple to put Meroms in the iMac and not the MBP.

And this, I think, is a crucial point. Correct me if I'm wrong, but after the first core duo iMacs and MBPs were announced, at no point did the iMacs have faster CPUs than the MBPs. In fact, wasn't 2.16GHz only even offered as an option in the MBPs? I can't imagine the $2k+ pro laptops will be inferior to the consumer desktop line until next year.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple uses Photokina to announce a new version of Aperture, especially with the pending release of Adobe's Lightroom.

I honestly think they won't do Merom...they go right to Santa Rosa. Or blow us away with something crazy like putting a Xeon into a Macbook Pro. Somewhat impossible, but no one really though all of the Mac Pro's would be Quad Core right away.

I think it would be really problematic for Apple to wait til Spring 2007 or whenever Santa Rosa will be ready. Even if there wouldn't be much of a real difference performance-wise between a MBP with Yonah and a MBP with Merom, the reality is that a lot of people will see it as inferior since every other laptop manufacturer will have Core 2 Duo laptops.

And again, it makes no sense to me that Apple would upgrade the processors in the iMacs (were iMac customers really even demanding Merom?) and not do the same soon for MBP.

Well, I don't know that these rumors are any more concrete than, say, every other previous "Meroms at [fill in the blank]" rumors that came before. I personally think it's probably right, but I also expected Merom to be announced on the 12th, or Merom to even be introduced on the 5th (remember all those rumors about them coming out September 5th?).

So who knows?
