I have a 1.83ghz MacBook. I LOVE this thing. My only gripe is the built in volume. It's TOO quiet! Even at the highest it's still way too low.

Is there any way to tweak this? When listening to iTunes I can barely hear the song. My hearing is fine. Ideas?

Yeah, the max volume is so low, I have a hard time hearing the apple movie trailers.

iBooks and Macbooks have very weak speakers in them. That's what is so good about getting the Powerbook / Macbook Pro... better speakers and better hardware all around. Even my old Clamshell has a suck ass speaker on it (and only 1 at that!), seems Apple thinks the low end systems don't need great sound.

Bust out them headphones

1. Open your applications folder.
2. Go to Utilities
3. Open Audio MIDI Setup
4. U'll see a section like this..


5. Crank those slidey thingys up to the max!

6. now pump out those tunes

A friend of mine has a MacBook and he has said his speakers are soft. I'm sitting here on a 17" Powerbook and I tested out those sliders. They do indeed make it louder.

Anyone know of any bad results from raising them?

Sorry guys, those sliders move just the same when you use the keyboard volume keys, at least they do on my macbook.

So no difference.

Another option is to open iTunes and go to View > Show Equalizer. Turn it on (if it's off), and turn that preamp up! I've been using this one for a while, and it works like a charm.

and when using quicktime, use vlc instead where you could up the volume past 200% of what quicktime offers.

This is a work around and not a real fix. I had Audio Hijack Pro on my MacBook. I decided to just Hijack the sound (not record) and process it through a Plugin that is available with the program to boost the output sound. Now my MacBook speakers sound great. The weak sound out of the MB speakers is definitely not a hardware issue as they sound good when the output is boosted. I will use this approach until Apple releases a software fix.
