At last I seems to have a perfect MBP after a new inverter, battery and logic board. Im in Paris France and it took over 2 weeks to get the logic board replaced. It seems that all of the French MBP users in the Paris area have taken their machines for a logic board replacement due the whine issue.

Anyway when I dropped off my MBP the Apple dealer also wanted me to bring my power adapter (no idea why but I complied anyway) However when I picked up the MBP yesterday it seemed that my original power adapter was lost in the system so the dealer supplied me with a 60 watt adapter. I guess it’s the same one as the they use with the MacBooks. He has asked me to return at the weekend to get the correct power adapter.

My question is what is the downside to using the the 60 watt adapter with my 15 inch MBP? In fact from a form factor perspective I prefer ther 60watt as its much smaller and lighter than the ‘official’ (80 watt?) adapter.

Cheers

Jason

It will charge the battery fully, but it will take longer to do so. In addition, if the computer is being used to do power intensive things while it's being charged, the smaller adapter may only be able to provide enough energy to power the computer, not charge the battery. That's my understanding, at least.

Thanks guys. The 60watt charger does seem to power the computer and charge the battery with no problems. I guess ill go with the 80watt charger anyway as thats what delivered with the MBP. Im sure if Apple could supply smaller lower wattage adapters with no effect on the performance of the MBP they would???

oh an by the way.. the whine has now gone and the best bit is the heat!! or lack of it.. the change is amazing - before the new logic board it could be quite painful to touch the bottom or the area near the top of the keyboard. Now its just luke warm and my MBP has been in action all day. Even the (60 watt) charger is stone dead cold... or just about.

It seems that CoreDuoTemp is not working with the new logic board howvere. Ill upgrade it and retest.

Way to go!!!

Let us know what it's temps are. My few day old MBP idles at around 50c when plugged in to a 23" display, and between 45c-50c normal. Seems like the fans run all the time though.

Latest report. It seems that I needed to install CoreDuoTem v1.

Having done so the machine idles at about 45oc, running 2 terminal sessions with yes > /dev/null the machine runs at 76oc.

The strange (aka good) thing is the MBP does not 'feel' much hotter than ideal and the fans are not running.

cool!

ps i tested this on battery.
