A friend of mine had her g4 ibook stolen and I'm wondering what options she has in terms of trying to recover it. If the person who has it decides to use it and/or update software is there any way for apple to track or trace that?

Thanks in advance,
B

No, no trace or tracking, unless your friend has installed tracking software. Even that would be a third party, not Apple. Apple will not notify your friend if someone calls in requesting tech support on her iBook, either.

Here's what can be done:
File a police report, and any possible insurance claim. The police report should include her serial number.
Call Apple, report the laptop stolen.
At a later time, if law enforcement contacts Apple through their usual channels (which do not include calling the 800 number), Apple will provide them with any relevant information regarding further contacts involving her laptop. This requires the police contact to be verified, and may involve a subpoena as well.
Your friend will have to get any information that results from this process from the police - Apple will not share information with her.
