so i've seen this problem come up way too many times now on my new MacBook

before and after i upgraded my ram i had this issue.

i'll close (apple key + Q) out of a program (Word, Excel, Transmissions, and other misc. apps) and then later when i go to open that program that i had used and succesfully closed out of earlier wont open. it will bounce once or twice then stop. and it wont open. clicking it again will do nothing. i will actually have to reboot if i need to use that given program.

any ideas on what causes this?? is it something i'm doing? ways to avoid this? anyone else get this problem?

List all programs. All Microsoft or from somewhere else? Delete preference files for the programs and rerun. If that doesn't work, reinstall those programs.

Same thing happens to me and only for programs that use Rosetta. Let me guess, the issue only happens with programs which are not universal, meaning they aren't released for the Intel Macs just yet.

This regularly happens with my install of MS Office and Adobe PS. I have to restart too.

What I end up doing now is that when I know I will need to use the app I just leave it running, I don't quit out of it. Annoying, wish there was a fix. I guess I'm just waiting for all the apps to go universal.

Anyways, here's my list of programs:

- Microsoft Office
- Adobe CS2

Both are not universal.

It happens because Rosetta has "crashed" or whatever you want to call it. If you restart they will work again.

is there any way to "restart" rosetta without restarting the whole computer?

is there any way to try to keep rosetta from "crashing". in other words, any idea what exactly causes it to crash?

Ever since the 10.4.7 update, Rosetta crashes constantly and takes all non UB apps with it requiring a restart. I am reloading to an external drive w/o the 10.4.7 update to see if its specific to that update. I never had a problem before the update.

**UPDATE**

I found on the Apple forums that it may be caused by ShapeShifter. You can open a terminal and type:

sudo killall translated

Then you should be able to restart Rosetta apps. But once you close them, it will crash again. Unsanity is aware of the problem: Unsanity.org: iTunes 7 and Unified Windows
