Hi:

I have just purchased a macbook pro. I am getting used
to the mac interface - it is not that bad. The reason why I finally went
over to the mac platform was the ability to dual boot windows. So now
I can boot into windows when I want to play games. Otherwise
I plan to do all my work: photoshop, papers etc on the mac side of things.

Questions:
1) I am planning on getting a widescreen display for the MBP. Is it possible
for the MBP to drive a 30" display (from Apple or Dell) ? Will the windows side
be able to drive the same monitor and will there be a noticeable display problem
when playing games on the windows side (e.g., half life 2) on a 30" display at full
resolution ? What is your experience ?
2) Is it a bad idea to run the MBP closed when running something as big as the 30" ?
Heat wise ?
3) Would you guys rather recommend a 24" instead of the 30" for games ? Any other
lcd brands I should be considering ?

1) Yes, your MBP will drive a 30" display. This is a feature of the graphics card, not the OS, so I would be fairly confident saying that it would be fully supported in WIndows as well.

2) Not a problem.

3) There's not really any reason to use a 24" if you can afford a 30", since you can just scale down the resolution of the 30" until you get acceptable performance.
I believe some other manufacturer also came out with a 30" recently, but I couldn't name it. There are reviews comparing the Apple and Dell 30" displays.
MBP 2.4/160/2/256
iMac 2.0/250/1/128

Am I missing something? I thought Apples 30" display needed 2 DVi ports. Powerbook only has 1?
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

1) I don't think the X1600 Mobility in the MacBook Pro can do HL2 at full 30" res (2560x1600) at a decent framerate, espically since the GPU and VRAM are substantially underclocked.

The 30" requires (and has always required) a dual link DVI port, not two DVI ports. IBM's T221 (22", even higher resolution) required two dual link DVI ports.

2) It should be fine.

3) I'd go with the 30" Dell.

Yes. It only needs one, but most graphic cards that support it have two. Very misleading.

Yes, it works. Apple offers the 30" display as a CTO purchase of a MBP. I don't know about Dell but consider the Apple displays excellent products so would not buy Dell, except perhaps as a secondary palette monitor on a tower setup.
