I was trying to change my "master password" the other day but it said my password was incorrect. Is it not that same one that I have to type in to log on to my computer when I boot up? Is there somewhere I can go where I can view my "master password?"

Nope. You can see it, but it is still the dots. System Preferences> Security. This also has nothing to do with PowerBooks and MacBook Pros.

You can change your login password, but there apparently is no way to change a "forgotten" master password once you've set it.

Still, it only takes your login password to turn off Filevault. So you turn off filevault.

Now, you can delete the master password. It's in your keychain access, and to delete it you use the login password. Then you can go to System Prefs and set new master password.

Any previous filevault that you've created with the "forgotten" password will still use the "forgotten" password.

Many people recommend using an encrypted disk image to store your sensitive docs rather than using filevault.
