Hey guys.

I was tempted to buy a new 20" iMac on Saturday, but didn't really need two computers so I instead got a 20" Apple Cinema Display to use with my 12" PowerBook 1.5 GHz. I've started saving so I can get the MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo when they're released, though I might even wait until Leopard is released to get a new computer. The display is nice...I like it a lot. I also use an Apple Wireless Mouse and Keyboard, too.

My PowerBook, which rarely ran with the fan on at full-speed, has now become very noisy with the fan almost always running high when in iTunes and watching video.

Question: Will my PowerBook shut off automatically if it gets too hot? I realize the fan running is "normal", but I wasn't expecting an external monitor to cause it to run all the time.

BTW The PowerBook is resting on a glass desk top with plenty of ventilation.

Yes.

This is a 12" PB problem. The additional graphics load (the 20" screen's 1.73 Mp vs. the PB's internal 0.79 Mp) heats up the GPU and the fan starts running all the time - even when the PB is otherwise idle. I've observed it with both my 12" PBs. An iCurve might help.

I really don't think the iCurve is feasible with my desk set-up, but I might be able to elevate it using a small tier or something and see if that helps. Love the 20" Cinema Display, though. Compared to what I'm used to, it's HUGE. :-)

Thanks for the quick reply and clear explanation.

Try opening up the laptop if you keep it close when you are connected to your ACD. This may help, but may not.
