After long wait I had decided to buy a MBP to replace my PB 1.67 . Can someone advice if the MBP (the one that has glossy display) rev.B has still issues (noise , etc) or all of these issues are solved ?.
Thank you for your help.

Mostly solved. Every once in a while one will be bad, but not to often anymore.

The noise issue was solved. Some people think the heat is a bit much, others accept it as being pretty much average.
As always there are a few one-offs, but no systemic issues that I know of.

I purchased a 2.16 15" a couple weeks ago and so far it has been very solid. It doesn't have any noise issues that I notice except for the faint whir of the fans from time to time. It is actually a bit cooler running than the MacBook it replaced.

I have just received a replacement week 37 (ie. last week!) machine after having multiple issues with my early week 8 model. Problems included the well documented noise issues but also screen defects (LCD leakage perhaps?) etc. Happy to say that this latest machine has fixed everything and even the annoying slant on the eject key has gone - I noticed this on a lot of machines.
I think the heat may have improved but it's still not ideal. I know the forthcoming Core2Duos are meant the run cooler but I also read that the difference may in fact be very slight.

I've had my 15" 2.16GHz MBP (2GB RAM) for 10 days, not a problem to speak of. Purchased at an Apple Store in NH.

So no-one is experiencing the whine with new MBPs any more?
I returned mine for this reason and I've been waiting for an update (not forthcoming!) until I re-buy. If it seems like the whine/heat has been sorted then I might order a replacement this week
(Although I am actually tempted to buy a macbook AND a 17" imac which, astonishingly, is around the same price as a MBP)

Unless you do video, why replace a 1.67 Powerbook with a MBP? They look the same, weigh the same, have the same features (except the PB has 800 fw), and for most things the speed is not that different. The MBP is MUCH hotter, though its screen is a bit brighter.

Let's hear a round of applause for those early-adopters who paid good money to be beta testers! Thanks to their tireless persistence in sending defective models back, over and over again, we now have working laptops! We should all thank them for using a ton of their money to test out some attractive-looking beta models.
The main clue foreshadowing problems: Changing the chip very shortly after all the hoopla at MacWorld San Fran. Oh sure, everybody loves a faster chip, but that change surely shows how it was rushed to market!

well.. I'm starting to have an odd issue... it seams to be heating up while the lid is closed.. like it's not going to sleep but as far as I can tell it is (the light is pulsing)... but man it's hot and actually runs the fan when I take it out of the sleeve, hot enough I'm not going to put it in again until I reslove the issue.
anyone heard os a similar circumstance?
oh, it's a Macbook Pro 2 gig Core Duo (2gig ram)

if the fans are running and it's heating up, then it's not asleep. Is it frozen when you try to wake it up from sleep? Even if the light is pulsing, the above symptons indicate that's it's definitely not sleeping.
I'd recommend using the keyboard to put the MBP to sleep, namely touching the power button briefly and then touching S to invoke sleep. Verify that it is sleeping, then close the lid.

What is with this huge amount of people who think the Core2Duo will run any cooler? This is not the case! The Core 2 Duo will run at the same temperature and give you more performance.

I had the same symptoms with my 1.67 GHz PB G4. In my case it was a serious warranty repair problem. IMO any box with unusual overheating (other than the normal hot of a high powered laptop) should be repaired quickly, and left depowered when unattended.

Apple's beta testing program is not something that Apple hires out. It is done all in-house by employees that are selected by a special board.

And your sugestion ?..
to take a MB because it is lighter ?...
I had a look of MB and compared to my PB it looks like a Yugo compared to Porsche in terms of quality .
