I just picked up a pair of Bose speakers and after connecting it to the Macbook it won't play. Then I tried my iPod earphones and it did not work as well... is there something wrong with the output socket? When I play through the Macbook's own speakers it works however.

Check System Preferences> Sound and see if you can select audio out.
