Im looking at upgrading the hard drive on my iBook. I have a 60gb now and im looking for something around 120 gb and up. What are some reasonable prices on new drives and where is the best place to get it installed? Thanks for the help.

For some of the best prices you can use Otherworld computing at OWC: Apple Mac G4 upgrades, Laptop Batteries, Memory, Drives They have a whole list and selection of Drives you can use.

Installation that is another issue. You might want to take it to an authorized Apple Dealer. Depending on how mechanically inclined you are and if you want to try it you could find a service manual and perform the upgrade yourself. Also there are several sites that if you buy it from them you can send them your iBook and they will do the install for you and include everything in the purchase price. I think Macsales does that.

There are approximately eleventy-billion screws (mostly Torx) of various sizes between the outside of the iBook case and the hard drive. There are a number of well-written descriptions of how to do the job, but plan plenty of time and have ALL the tools at hand before you start.

I also recommend taking it in. iBooks are tough. And I think at last count, they were up to twelvety billion screws.

Either one of them should work. As long as they are 2.5" drives they should be fine. The 300 Gig one I don't think is a Laptop HD.

I picked-up a 60g HD from New Egg a month ago for about $50. Check their site, and scroll through all the options - you'll find high and low prices model-to-model. We bought a MB in August, but I also picked-up the new HD to resurrect my iBook.

Here is a how-to for replacing the iBook HD;
iBook G4 Hard Disk replacement
And yes, it looks like quite a lot of work. But I figure it's worth the effort since the iBook is still a nice, useable Mac and installing a larger HD makes it even more so...

Having done this, I advise you to get the best hard drive you can. I regret only getting a 60GB (was 40GB) even though I sold the original and ended up only spending $10 on the deal. I REALLY REALLY regret getting a 4200rpm 60GB. I could replace it, but I don't feel like cracking this thing open again just for that...

I recently replaced my mid-2005 iBook G4 hard drive and while it is a lot of screws, if you have patience and keep the screws all organized, it's not hard. Tedious yes, but not hard if you're careful.

I got the guide from ifixit.com and while it was a little out of date (it had me pulling the Airport card which was in a different location than in the guide and pulling a non-existent ribbon cable on the HD itself) it was very useful. It even had a "screw guide" that you could place the screws on as you removed them to keep it all organized.

Now, since I did it myself, I sure hope I didn't void my AppleCare warranty. All went well and the computer runs like a champ, so I would think not, but I hope not to have to test that theory.

You did indeed void your AppleCare warranty.

I don't know if they'll ever be able to figure that out though.
