I've just received a used 12" PowerBook which is in superb condition except for the feet. The original little Apple feet are missing, and the previous user has stuck large, flat, rubber feet on the bottom. I think they are the self-adhesive sort as they have slipped a little, leaving little outlines of residue on the base. The feet themselves seem fairly secure, but they are big, ugly, and slightly uneven so the case rocks very slightly.
Does anybody have any advice on how to remove stuff stuck to a PowerBook case and how to clean it up? I might just buy proper Apple replacement feet (I know they are pricey), but the residue on the bottom case annoys me. How could anyone stick something on such a beautiful machine?
...having said that, they do rise the machine off the desk by more than the standard feet. Not that that is an issue as I'm picking up an iCurve this afternoon...
Cheers in advance!
Zen

Uh, the replacement feet are not pricey, unless free is pricey. Take it to an Apple Store and they should take it in back and replace them for free.

The feet on the 12" PB are integrated into the bottom case. They don't just snap in. The entire bottom case is usually replaced.
As for removing goo, use Goo Gone, but extremely sparingly. Carefully soak a tiny part of a paper towel and clean off the goo.

Oh really? I was reading some sites that said it cost US$20 (about NZ$30) to get them replaced.
The problem is the gunge from the big stuck-on feet it currently has. I want to buy a new battery, so those feet have to go anyway because on the 12" PowerBook the front right foot is part of the battery itself.
Edit: Are you sure about the integrated feet on the 12"? There are four little ports in the case itself, and the rubber feet are missing. It's similar to my 12" iBook G4 - it has four ports and rubber feet that snap in (i've had to resnap them myself!).
Having said that, I wouldn't say no to a new bottom case. But I bet that kind of repair isn't done in New Zealand.

First off, zen is in New Zealand (right?), so he can't just waltz into an Apple store. However, the feet are not "integrated" in... they are glued on. The "correct" way to replace the feet is to replace the bottom case... but, you can also get replacement feet and superglue them on (which is what the Apple Store does). If you go to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, they can order the exact feet for you. becareful though, have them look it up by serial number as different model PowerBooks have different feet even though they all look the same!

Cheers for the help guys. I'm off to my local Apple Store (or the equivalent we have anyway!) and will report back tomorrow
