I've got the widescreen 20 inch display and I'm currently using it as a monitor to supplement my powerbook's screen, but i hardly use the extra real estate at all. I would like to close my powerbook and exclusively use the new display, but it will only show the same resolution I have running on my powerbook, so I'm not getting a bigger display.

How can I make the new larger screen act as my main desktop, and still take advantage of the whole 20 inches?

Did you go into System Preferences and click on displays? From there hit "detect displays". Tell that Book you have an external monitor with different resolutions.
MBP - 2.33GHz C2D, 3GB RAM, 256MB VRAM, 160GB HD
PB - 1.5GHz G4, 2GB RAM, 128MB VRAM, 80GB HD
PM - Dual 1GHzG4, 1.5GB RAM, NVidia GForce 3, 2x 80 GB HD

When you go to display preferences when you're connected to the external monitor, you will see two display images. The smaller one is your PowerBook. At the top you'll see a mock menu bar. Simply drag it over to the big display, and it will become your main display. You can even close your PowerBook and run it as a desktop and just use your monitor, assuming you have a keyboard and mouse.

people, ya'll need to read more carefully

put your powerbook to sleep, close your powerbook, and connect your monitor first. then connect whatever else you need to hook up. this usually wakes your powerbook up with the lid closed. if not just move your EXTERNAL mouse around and your 20'' should be the only monitor being used.

only annoying thing about this is that youll need to get an external keyboard and mouse, and, everytime you want to start your computer after it gets shut off is that you have to open the pb lid slighty and turn it on that way, just close it back quickly so that the external monitor is being used only
hope this helps

it would be cool if they made a wireless keyboard with a power button that could your laptop on without having to open it.

I don't mean to be an ass, but if you have time to come here and post on these forums, I don't see why you don't have time to not skip entire words.

"That could your laptop on without having to open it". ???

Am I the only person that checks when I write to make sure there aren't any serious errors in it? If I post a short post, I check it as I type. If i'm writing a biography, i'll re-read it when i'm done, before posting it.

Just to clarify, that sentence was supposed to be "That could turn your laptop on without having to open it".

To the OP, I can't say anything that hasn't already been said. They've told you what you needed to know.

You're certainly not the only person who checks their posts through for mistakes (I always do) but you'll have to accept that a lot of people don't. We're all human, we all make mistakes.

If you do anything other than surf, try setting up with all your palettes on the laptop screen and open. Such 2-display operation is SOP for graphics pros. You may find it productive.

It's "macbook pros", you need to capitalize the "I" at the beginning of the next sentence, and posable is spelled possable.

Yes you can. It works exactly the same.

I think you mean possible

Anyway, I don't see why your PowerBook won't display the LCDs native res. you could try using SwitchResX or something.

Sorry, when my brain is bombarded with such insane levels of writing errors, i'm entitled to make a tiny mistake once in a while.
