Not sure if this is a hardware issue or a software issue. I haven't quite figured out why this happens, but here's the scenario. I leave the lid open and randomly (when it's idle and nothing is running in the background) the fan spins up to full blast and won't stop untill I wake the computer. The computer doesn't wake until I close the lid and open again, but that's another issue. Just recently, I had the activity monitor open when this random fan spin-up happened, and when I logged back into the computer, it showed that kernal_task was 100% the entire time. Could this be because of a custom power management setting? I have it set so it never goes to sleep with the lid open. I haven't checked to see if this random fan spin-up occurs with the power management set to "normal."

I have a new (refurbished) Macbook, just received it a few hours ago. A few minutes after being on the desktop my fan speed jumped to 100% and never stopped, even through all the system updates and restarts. Restarting turned it off, but I left the house shortly after and when I returned it was running full blast again.

I've got the Normal power settings selected so it's not that. % CPU currently shows 94% idle. If I shut the lid so it goes to sleep it turns off.

The only thing I can guess is that it might be a file or setting copied from my old 500mhz iBook (I had used the firewire transfer option when starting it up the first time, and it auto-rebooted part way through before it had completed). I called Apple Support and the Tech suggested this and that I should try a clean reinstall of OS X to see if that helps. I have yet to do so. I do wonder though if there isn't some prefs or settings file that could be deleted to cure this?

FYI: The machine has the latest firmware installed, so that's not it.
