Mac OS X 10.4.8 suddenly quit! I had my MacBook sleeping while I was listening to my iPod and notced that the Apple logo (on the back of the display) was glowing and the fans where running at full speed. I opened the lid and on the screen in 4 different languages it said: "You need to restart your computer" in a gray box with the power button logo in the background. So, Irestarted an the crash reporter said: "Your computer was restarted because Mac OS X suddenly quit! I reported it to Apple.

Has this ever happened before?

I reported it to Apple.
Do not hold your breath!
I am surprised you have never run into that before. It speaks well of your Mac experience.
It is the baddest of the kernel panics and can mean anything from a corrupted system to bad ram to a bad processor. Of course it can also mean absolutely nothing. I have seen it happen most often just as you describe, a laptop waking up from sleep.
I would note things like newly installed programs, devices (MIDI, mouse, USB things...) and wait for it to happen again. Was your iPod connected to the MacBook?

2 things:

1. I think it was the app TinkerTool (messes with the system to do things like put the dock on the top of the screen). I deinstalled it.
2. "speaks well for my Mac experience"? What are you saying?

I think brassplayersrock wants to know if the iPod was plugged into the MacBook or not.

Computer > USB cable > iPod > Headphones > Person.

Why the USB cable may have been connected I don't know but it could have woken the Mac up for some reason and made it kernel panic.

It did it again twice. I'm going to take it in to the Apple Store this weekend. It only does it when its sleeping. I shut sleep off and is going to see what happens. BTW I mis-posted and meant that I had my iPod unplugged. Sorry about that ....

I have had this happen to my MacBook twice! Once it was sleeping in my backpack, when I took it out after it wouldn't wake from sleep, because it had shut down. I plugged it in and turned it on, and the battery was dead. Once the system started up, it said Mac OS X had unexplectedly quit! I think this was because it got warm in my bag, and the fan went on full blast, killing the battery.

Tonight however, it was plugged in and sleeping on my carpet floor. I was sleeping as well (haha) and once I woke up, I could not wake it from sleep. Also, it was pretty hot and the fan was on. So I held down the power button, forcing it to shut off. After 10 minutes I turned it on and after startup: Mac OS X has unexpectedly quit!

After that I came here and now I'm typing this message.

I have all the recent updates too. So I think this is another RSS-like issue having to do with sleep mode... I really don't want to have this thing repaired, but if I must...

I think these MacBooks aren't sleeping properly. Could be a reedswitch cable problem. Try putting them to sleep manually using the Apple menu or pressing the power button.

My MacBook has stopped doing it (Mac OS X suddenly quitting). Did it 3 times then stopped...

Thank you CATS. I don't understand why people who need technical support are so careless with spelling, punctuation and details.

^^ Agreed. From what I can translate, I think meee21 is talking about the dialog box that pops up when you press the power button, asking you if you want to restart, sleep, or shutdown.

That is normal. This thread is relating to something which is actually abnormal, a kernel panic.

If that dialog box pops up at random times, however, then that is abnormal, but it is still different from what we are talking about. Please clarify for us in good, plain english. Thanks.

Maybe your power button has a short in it or is very sensitive. Call Apple and see if you can get it repaired.

Does it switch itself on?
