Hi everyone, I just got a new MacBook and wanted to know:

Will the MagSafe adapter protect my computer from electricity peaks? (Does it work like a surge protector?).

Nope. You need a dedicated surge protector for that.

Is there anywhere I can get an adapter from other than Apple?

I dunno, but I found this on ZDNet's site. It appears the MagSafe connector is patented, so it's not likely that there will be very many "inexpensive" competitors for Apple's product. There's also some interesting history on the MagSafe connector on News.com.

If you want to protect your mac from surges, use a high quality surge protector to protect the magsafe.

Amazon has the MacBook Pro model in stock; others have used it instead of the 65W MacBook adapter:
