I don't get it. If the screen is closed the Mac is asleep. Why would you want your internet connection to stay "active"? Or is the issue the long reconnect time when you wake it up?

Maybe they wish to remotely wake it up.

When the laptop is asleep, it cannot download or do other tasks. What you want to do is to keep the laptop awake while the screen is closed. The way to do that is to connect an external keyboard/ mouse (and monitor to see what you are doing). Then close the lid and use the external keyboard to wake it up. BTW, that may not be a great idea if you will be doing CPU intensive stuff for a long time (or anything that will make the laptop generate a lot of heat). Laptops dissipate heat better with the lid open.

Why not just leave lid open, and turn down brightness of screen to 0

The poster asked how to use the internet with the lid closed. People could have various reasons for wanting to do that. e.g. aesthetics, space considerations, protection against spills or whatever.
