Hi guys,

I think it's not an interesting thread (Seems everyone use Tiger!) however, I need your help. Yey.. This is my first posting!!

I just upgraded my old PB to 12 inch 1.5Ghz PB G4 which is great! (I know it's still old one. Anyway I love this machine except this issue.. ) and this one pre-installed with Tiger 10.4.2 as you know.

The problem is that some of my application (Vector NTI) only works under Panther.
Therefore, I need to downgrade to Panther..

Here is the quetion.
Is it possible installing Panther on this machine?

I search the specification document from Apple and it's kinda confusing.
One shows this machine can run from 10.3.7. and the other one tells above 10.4.2.

And if it's possible, could you tell me how I can install 10.3.7? I only have original Panther OS, maybe 10.3?

Thanks for your help!!

You can always install 10.3 and upgrade, but I've never heard of a program that worked on 10.3 and not in 10.4. Check for an update to the program. There must be some sort of update or explanation why it wouldn't work in 10.4.

I don't think you can downgrade from Tiger to Panther without doing a fresh install. But if you want to do a fresh of Panther, just get some Panther OS discs and go through the motions as if you were installing any other OS.

Actually, they gave a rather clear explanation why their software doesn't work on Tiger.

With the recent PBs you can't install a system that pre-dates it. The tech specs I found say your PB originally came loaded with Panther.

PowerBook G4 (12-inch 1.5GHz) - Technical Specifications

To see whether the Panther install disk you have will work, pop it into your optical drive and startup with the option key pressed. Then choose the install disk and see if it starts up.

After backing up your internal drive, you could just reformat it and install Panther (best would be to use the PB's original Panther system disks). You might also consider partitioning the internal drive with two partitions and running Tiger on the main one and your Panther only application on the other. Running Panther on an external Firewire drive would be another solution.

Enjoy your newish PB. I love my PB 12 G4 1.33 which does just about everything I need.

Thanks a lot guys..

The Vector NTI for Mac OS X from Invitrogen does not work under Tiger and they will not make something like a patch.. as explained on their website.

Anyway,
I installed Panther on my new PB by targeting one of small partitions using my prev. PB as rjt1000 mentioned. By the way, is there any difference between my PB's panther disk and the original panther disk? This new one came with 10.4.2 so I can't install Panther using this one. What I thought was it would be better using the PB's disk so used target mode. However should be no difference. Right? It's fun using Targeting mode anyway..

I aslo considered installing Panther on the external drive but I oftenly use this App. and don't want to bring it all the time. However it would be the best solution if my PB doesn't work with Panther. Thanks.

What I concerned was.. after installing the Panther, whether it can boot.. because I saw this one (PowerBook G4 (17-inch Double-Layer SD) - Technical Specifications) before..

However, it works well under Panther!! I finally have my dream machine!!

Again, thanks all!!

Here is one more quick question!
I thought it was 80gb but the total was 93.2 gb. Does it mean that mine is 100gb?
