really...
when the 12" powerbook was discontinued (for example), where do the last available units go?

am trying to find a last-gen 12", but 'new', not refurbished or used (and not $1500!).

what happens to old macs when the new kids come in??
does apple make a bonfire and burn them? are they locked in an underground vault in new mexico?

or...??

...or buried in the Logan landfill in Utah, along with all the left-over Lisas...?

Or maybe in the desert where Atari buried all those ET cartridges...

Seriously, they're probably sent to the repair location in Texas for use as spare parts.

I'm guessing Apple times their stuff well so that they have as few 'books left over as possible when the new models come out, and the extras are sold off in the 'special deals' section of the online store. You can get a 14" iBook G4 for $1000 right now. No 12" Powerbooks though.

My guess is they sell them as "refurbished" even though they are new. I purchased a 1G nano right after the 2Gs came out. The condition of my 1G was flawless, it was new, no way that was a repaired unit.

Man that's pricey considering that you could get a new MacBook for the same.

Apple has auction sales. Shreve systems and several others buy truckloads of discontinued items for resale. They keep some at repair centers for swap out on warranty work.
