Hey guys

I've been looking all over for a pcmcia card that will work with my pismo, and allow it to connect to my wireless network. I have an original basestation.

I can't seem to find one in a reasonable price range. I'd like to pick it up at something like Best Buy, ASAP.

Anyone know what I should get?

I have had two cards, both belkin the first one was rubbish. You need the one with the compatible chipset. As I am away from home I can't remember which one but believe me, you don't want the one that needs drivers as the drivers are cr*p.

I am not being very helpful here but I can give you the exact part number at the end of the week. Until then search on Pismo and Wireless on Google and look for a site that has the OS compatible chip set. Then look for the right product at Belkin. It should cost about £30.

Hi,

You need a PCMCIA card with the Broadcom chipset. These should be recognized by OS X airport software without the need for additonal drivers.

If you want to buy new from a reputable retailer, this one should work:

WLI-CB-AG54 AirStation 802.11 b/g/a 54MBps... (WLI-CB-AG54) at OWC

If you want to save some $$$ and dont mind buying from eBay, these should work:

eBay - dell truemobile 1300, Networking, Desktop Laptop Accessories items on eBay.com

Enjoy,

You can buy a used dead Airport basestation and break it open and remove the card! For $20 its a deal. It will plug in the PCMCIA slot. And since it was in Apple's basestation! It will work!

The old "Snow"Airport base stations have Orinoco silver cards. These have the Lucent chipset which will work natively with OS 9 but not OS X.

I'm talking about the original Apple Basestations prone to bad capacitors in powersupply.

For those who might need it, I wanted to add the info on this very low cost and easily available 802.11g PCMCIA card that works without drivers in OS X.

It's the Motorola WN825G which is mentioned here and here

These can be found on ebay for under $20, and OS X thinks its an Airport Extreme card (because it has the same Broadcom chipset).

So if you have an old PowerBook with a PCMCIA slot, there is a great alternative to spending $75+ for an original airport card (plus you get 802.11g)

Also for those with Ti-books, the external antenna on this PCMCIA card will give much better performance than your internal antenna.

Hi,
I purchased an original airport card on ebay and stuck it into the PCMCIA slot on my Pismo Powerbook running OS9.0.2. How might I know if it is detecting the wireless signal in my office (in the same office, at the same time, my G4 running 10.3.9 automatically detects and connects and receives email before I can even hope to intervene) ??

Do I need to install a driver? Make changes in a control panel?

TIA,
lombardi3 (Allan)

The original airport card is NOT installed in the PCMCIA slot. There is an internal airport card slot. This link will show you how to do it. You will also need the airport software.
