Guys looking to upgrade this. But after talking to the store keeper at Apple I gathered that if I install the extra 1 GB of RAM myself I would compromise my warranty. Is this true?

Is it worth getting it done through the store itself?

What is usually the difference in price?

Thanks

Not true. RAM is user installable, and does not affect your warranty (unless you really screw it up)!

apple wants $500 for 2gb of memory...i got 2gb of memory and installed it myself for $210

just an idea of what you're looking at as far as prices through apple vs doing it yourself

thanks for the quick responses guys.

another quick question. I already have 512X2 MEM - can I have another 512X2 installed to upgrade or do i need to exchange mine for a 1 GB and buy another 1 GB to upgrade to 2 GB? Or is there enough room in the chipboard for me to add the 4 chips.

Finally is it hard to do the installation

Thanks

it's very easy to install, and yes, you only have space for 2 SO-DIMMS. To get 2GB you'll need to replace both of your chips with 1GB modules

I installed my 2 gigs myself, I got both 1 gig sticks from a local PC store and put them in myself. It was easy, just follow the instructions, and the speed increase I got from it was 2 to 3 times faster than my already fast machine.
