I have a lombard I kind of cobbled together from spare parts: 400Mhz processor, 320MB RAM, 6GB Apple HD, etc. The problem is that it will not boot unless I first hit the hard reset button. I'll tell it to boot and then I can hear the hard drive spinning and the processor will get hot, but nothing shows up on the screen. When I hit the reset button the green light blinks. Then once I hit the startup button, it starts right up and runs perfectly. Any ideas?

Wow, this got buried fast. Anyone have any ideas? Because of this I can't get it to boot into OS 9 at all, this is irritating.

That is weird. I have a Lombard, and I remember reading somewhere that the sensors that tell if the laptop is shut or not can get stuck. That green blinking light is a sleep light. It is just hunch, but if you try waving a magnet over those little rubber nubs over the monitor, and where they meet the case, you may fix the problem (if that is even the problem).
That is sort of a shot in the dark, but hey, why not, right?

It just blinks a single time after I hit the reset button. I did replace a busted display with the one that's currently in it, so I don't know if that could be any part of it.

Wait, did you try the magnet thing? I suppose something could have been disturbed if you replaced the screen.

Does the Lombard have a small PRAM battery? Many Macs won't start up if the PRAM battery is dead.

I have a Lombard with a dead PRAM battery. If i don't keep resetting the date, it can act goofy. It does, however, boot.

Ah, well, perhaps resetting the PRAM is what gossamer needs to try? Make sure you hold down the key combination at startup through at least 4 chimes (even Apple began to recommend this in the olden days.) Or, with OS X installed, reset nvram.

There is some sort of battery thingy inside, I've got several Lombards for parts that I can pull one from. I'll let you know how it goes.

Nope, didn't help. And holding 'c' at startup won't start from the CD, and holding option won't take me to the boot options screen.

Pram Batery death can cause these problems. Most batterys would be dead if they weren't replaced by now. Taking one out of another used unit is no guarantee that is good!
