Hi,

I seem to be having trouble getting my CDs and DVDs to mount on my system. I recently updated iTunes (continues to act buggy) and updated the system to 10.4.8.

I have been able to sporadically mount or burn a DVD.

Is there a way to tell if this is a software or hardware failure?

Don't know if this will help you or not, but...

I was having similar problems not only on my G4 TiBook, but also on my G5 tower. I bought and used a Memorex DVD/CD lens cleaner (looks like a DVD, but has little brushes on the bottom). Ran it through, and VOILA!! Both work flawlessly now.
