How is the MacBook sound quality and volume compared to the speakers on the MacBook Pro? I'm contemplating a replacement for my 4 year old TiBook - which is/was a great machine, but its speakers are definitely on the quiet side. Is the MacBook and/or Pro an improvement?

I can't compare it to the TiBook (never owned one), but the MacBook definitely has very quiet speakers. Recent firmware updates appear to have increased their max volume a bit, but not by much.

The MacBook's speakers get a little louder than iBook G4's speakers, but not much louder. The MacBook Pros I've heard in the Apple Store get pretty loud though. Your best bet is to just carry around a spare pair of earphones to use for listening to music and audiobooks.

admittedly, the macbook speakers are relatively wimpy compared to those belonging to a macbook pro, most likely due to the difference in the location of the speakers. watching a dvd with a macbook in a place with more than a little bit of ambient noise is impossible

Yep. The MacBook speakers are only adequate from a volume and sound quality standpoint. This is not a problem if you have headphones or a remote speaker system.
