I got my white Macbook C2D yesterday. I am going to migrate from my iMac w/250GB HD to this 80GB HD Macbook.
I have an external 160GB USB drive, but I am finding that I cannot fit my core content (stuff I would want with me) on the 80GB drive (I know, my fault, I should have thought ahead).
So I am looking for a replacement drive. The 160GB Seagates appear to be priced at a premium (if you can find them) over the 120GB drives. I have found the 120 on computers4sure.com for $128 (free shipping). I found the 160GB for $179 (free shipping) at another site (see below) That amounts to $1.06 per GB for the 120 and $1.12 per GB for the 160. Normally I wouldn't put this much thought into it and just get the 160, but I am trying to keep my costs down right now.
Does anyone know of a better deal? I am struggling to find places who clearly state they have the SATA drive (vs the UATA drives).
Also, I read that I need an external enclosure just to initially format the new drive. Is that right? The same web site appears to have those for only $15, so not to big of a deal. I could then put the old 80GB in that enclosure I guess.

Ok, apparently nobody knows of any better deals out there.
About my other question, do I have to install the new drive in an external enclosure to do the initial format or can I just stick a brand new drive into the Macbook and book the Apple Startup DVD and do a new install? My machine is days old, so I don't care if I have to re-install everything.

You do not need to install the new drive in an enclosure just to format it. Install it in your Macbook and boot with the the Tiger DVD. I think the installer will format it for you. If not you can alway access Disk Utility from the installer menu bar.

I would put the old drive in an enclosure, boot to it, use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drive to the new internal after formatting it, then format the old drive and use it for extra space.

Just to close this topic us (for me anyway).
I just bought a 160GB from memorylabs.com with an external enclosure (for my old 80GB that will come out of the Macbook). Free shipping. The drive was $176.30.
Ok, now I expect someone to post the (just found it for $145 at supermanfangotscrewed.com or something).
Thanks for the replies. With the enclosure, at least I have options now.
