Is there some kind of utility that will keep my MBP from going to sleep when I close the laptop? Sort of like in Windows where you are given a choice whether you want your PC to sleep or just hibernate or do nothing.

Why do you want to do this? You know you can use it in closed lid mode.

You cannot stop the act of closing the screen from causing the computer to sleep. However, if you have an external display connected AND the computer is connected to AC power, then you can wake the closed computer with an external keyboard and it will operate with only the external display.

Actually you can stop the computer from going to sleep when the lid is closed, but there are some problems. There are two programs that prevent sleep (InsomniaX and SleepLess). Problem is that Apple changed something in 10.4.8 so they do not work in the .8 update; they will work in .7 and under.

The only work around in 10.4.8 is to connect a usb mouse while the lid is open, close the lid, and then click to mouse to wake it up. You can then disconnect the mouse and it will stay awake.

As to the heat issues everyone seems to worried about. It's nonsense. Apple designed the notebook to run closed with a keyboard, monitor and mouse attached and these have no affect on heat so it will be fine. I DO however use smcFanControl to keep my MBP cool.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. My main reason for doing this is because I often close the lid when I'm moving the computer because my screen is a bit problematic and creaks a lot when I move the laptop. I just want to be able to close the computer and carry it with me without my music and stuff stopping.

I'll look into those programs and I guess wait until an update or something comes out.
