I just thought I would post my findings. I own a last generation 15" powerbook (see my current signature) and noticed that I was unable to use my external 2.5" laptop enclosure without using this required y-cable. Anyone out there with a 5400rpm or faster 2.5" hdd in an enclosure that uses usb 2.0 will know what i mean. Anyways, this new 17" c2d that I bought will power this 2.5" with one single usb cable. I thought i remember seeing in a forum somewhere where the first gen mbp did not allow for this. This is a bonus for me and I thought I would let others know.

I have an update to post. I noticed that this new mbp was having the finder seize up often when accessing the small 2.5" usb 2.0 drive when running off the single usb cable. Either way, i went back to using the y-cable and nothing so far has happened like before so i am going to say it was the single usb cable that was causing the finder to freeze up. Just thought i would let others know who may be in a similar situation.

On my 1st gen Mbp I found I had no problem with using a usb powered enclosured on a single port on the right side, but not the left. I have not yet tried it on my c2d mbp
