Ok I have always used Pcs. I have a desktop which is an AthlonXP Mobile 2600+
processor running at 215x11.5= 2.5ghz with 1 gig of ram. My laptop is an Ibm
Thinkpad X30 ultra slim p3 1.2 ghz with 1 gig ram. I just got my first ibook
which is a G3 700 640 megs ram, 30 gig hd, cdrw/dvd, airport etc 14". The ibook
is running Mac OS 10.4.8. It seems that it runs very sluggishly especialy
compared to my Thinkpad. Is it that Mac apps just generally take longer to open
than PC ones? am I just being unrealistic comparing the two? Is 10.4.8 to much
for the g3 700 and should I lower down to 10.3? Please help me because I really
want to give my ibook a fighting chance

It's because a 700 mhz with 640 MB of ram doesn't really compare to a 1.2 ghz with 1 GB of ram. Your PC's are quite a bit faster than the iBook, and I don't think downgrading the OS will solve your problem. If you want a faster iBook then upgrading your RAM would be the most beneficial. Aside from that, I'm not sure there's a whole lot you can do.

Welcome to MacNN and the world of Macs. Hope you enjoy!

well i wasnt comparing the desktop to the ibook just the thinkpad. I thought a G3 700 compared to a P3 1.3 ghz. Is that wrong?

The Thinkpad has twice the ram the iBook does, as well as a 500 mhz speed difference. It would definitely make a difference.

hmm I thought I had read somewhere that a G3 700 was equivilant to a PIII 1.2ghz. Is that not correct?
