(hopefully this isn't my dumbest post ever... )
several months each winter, my desk gets bathed in direct sunlight;
so, my powerbook (plus my external drives, and some other peripherals) are in the sun several hours each day.
is this bad? is there anything to worry about, or...?

In direct sunlight, metal objects (like an aluminum skin laptop) will get hot and subject the inner circuitry, screen etc to un-necessary heat. Plastic items like the laptop screen, peripheral enclosures, cabling etc can indeed be damaged by ongoing direct sun exposure.
Why not play it safe and get a shade or curtain?

I've noticed that my MBP, doesn't get get hot when left in the sun at all... Aluminium tends to reflect IR from the sun.

Depending on the kind of windows you have the sun coming in through, this could be a minor irritation or nothing at all. Double-pane, thermal windows will only let (mostly) visible light in, so they should not be a problem. Older, single-pane windows let almost everything in, and that can be a bit of a hassle.
You could always just put a light cover over everything, like a small tablecloth or something, and not worry about it (or roomies) at all.
