Hi

I have recently bought a 2 year old ibook G4. I am new to Macs and have no complaints whatsoever other than i can not get it to connect to the net.

I have been into the internet preferences and changed all the user and password details to match with mine, however I keep getting a message saying authentication failed...

My service provider is NTL and I am on a broadband package with them. I don't really know much about this technical stuff, but basically the phone line goes through a small box device called speedtouch before connecting to my mac.

I rang a specialist who said I might need a router to solve the problem...? Can anyone help me? Please?

Alcatel Speed Touch (DSL)? Sounds like a PPPoE problem, and if you cannot configure OS X's PPPoE client properly you should get a router from Netgear or D-Link. Hardware routers obviate the need for computer authentication, and I highly recommend them - especially for DSL connections.

try changing setting to dhcp (without manual), apply settings, restart machine and see what happens. let it automatically find your connection.
