I have purchased an ibook g4 running mac os x 10.4.8.
the person i baought it from left everything on that he didnt want, however the hard drive is almost full and i want to clear some of it out. i am new to macs, and i want to know how can i get a breakdown of what is taking up memmory. also any ideas to empty some space with out deleting a lot of the programs (office, photoshop, ilfe, etc)
any help would be great, thanks

you could delete his useraccount, that leaves you with the programs, though they might ask for a new registration.

edit : just make a new useraccount and use that first before you delete stuff.

Check out Disk Inventory X. It should be able to show you what is taking up the most space, what kind of files they are, and where they are in the directory structure. Be on the lookout for any large video *cough*porn*cough* files, hahah.
