So a friend of mine has a Macbook laptop and has the misfortune to be in a building
with about 11 other tenants with wireless access points.

We've got the thing set-up so that Airport uses his wireless access point and not
any of the others, however, the darn thing always requires is to select his WAP in
order to get access to the network.

In other words, click on the airport icon in the menu bar, pull down to his WAP
and then wait for it to kick in.

Why can't it be set-up so that when he boots he's connected like on (I hate to say it)
any Wintel PC? I don't use wireless on any of my Macs at my home so it's a bit alien
to me although I work with wireless on my work PCs and they work fine and never
need to be "selected".

Ideas?

System Preferences > Network > Airport >

"By default Join:" Select Preferred Networks and choose his AP.

I have mine on auto however and it remembers my AP just fine. I may have checked a box when first setting up my wireliess to this router.

His is set-up that way, but it sits and waits to join something.

It's possible this guy is actually being impatient but I rebooted it
and watched and it would not connect to the WAP unless I told it
to connect.

I might look at it again to verify it is set-up that way but I swear
his machine is getting confused with all the WAPs in that building.

First, this forum is for the MacBook PRO, not the MacBook. Second, ALL networking issues go in the Networking forum.

Post in the Networking forum and you'll get more responses, too.
