I want to leave my screensaver on all the time but the screen keeps dimming and then eventually turns off. this doesn't seem to have to do anything with the ambient light function. How do i set it to never dim the screen no matter how long i leave it untouched?

Try going to the Energy Saver preference panel and, under the Sleep tab, set both the bars to Never.
