I'm looking to pick up a MBP next week while in NYC for a few days but I was wondering if it's possilbe to buy one with upgraded RAM and harddrives at the stores or can you only do that online?

Thanks!

Apple Stores generally only stock the stock configurations. If you want more RAM you have three choices: pay Apple a LOT to have it installed during manufacturing, pay an Apple Store a LOT MORE to install it in a stock, off-the-shelf computer, or buy it cheaper online and install it yourself. Hard drives aren't as easy to swap out, and the premium for them in the built-to-order process is fairly low.

Just for reference I thought I'd share:
Price to upgrade MBP from 1 to 2 GB when ordering from Apple online: $175
Price of OWC brand 1GB chip: $123

It's a different story with the MacBook though, as you usually want to replace both chips.
Upgrade MB from 2x512 to 2x1GB: $175
Price of OWC brand 2x1GB chips: $240
And I've seen the stock Apple 2x512 chips go for around $50 or so before, so it might actually be a better choice to have Apple take care of the RAM when getting a MacBook.

Actually, the Apple Stores will tend to stock at least one non-stock configuration. Generally a higher end... (for instance, they stocked a higher configuration black macbook, but not white). Just call your local Apple Store and ask.

A 2 GB MBP DIMM from OWC is $619 versus $575 for the Apple upgrade to 3 GB. But in my case I can salvage the 1 GB DIMM and use it in a lesser MBP ($127). Generally though I agree that it is best to let Apple deal with laptop upgrades.
